Since graduation in 1966 John has worked as a Project Architect in Dublin, Site Architect in Carlow before moving to Japan where he studied and also worked as a Design Architect.  In 1972 he returned to Limerick and joined the practice of Charles Quinn.  In 1976 he took over management of the practice and in 1982 formed a new practice, Quinn Savage Smyth Architects, by amalgamating with the practices of K. Savage and W.T. Smyth.  John is now a Director of Quinn Architects and remains fully active within the practice.

John has extensive experience in the design and construction of many building types including Educational, Community and Recreational, Health Care, Industrial, Religious, Residential, Building Adaptation and issues including Safety and Access.

Relevant experience as chief architect includes:

  • Plassey, Kilmurry and Dromroe Student Villages, University of Limerick
  • Train Hall Roof, Heuston Station
  • Accessibility Projects for Bus Éireann
  • Nursing Home and Hospice, Milford Care Centre, Castletroy, Co. Limerick
  • Nursing Home Refurbishment and Extension, Carrigoran, Co. Clare
  • Residential accommodation for retired nuns in Limerick City and County
  • Library, Mary Immaculate Training College, Limerick
  • Community housing for the Irish Wheelchair Assocation, Barrack Street, Limerick
  • Speculative Housing, Castletroy, Co. Limerick
