The redeveloped Markets Field held its first fixture on Friday, June 5 when Limerick FC hosted Drogheda Utd in the SSE Airtricity League Premier Division. Redevelopment work on the former greyhound stadium, which is considered to be the spiritual home of senior soccer in Limerick, has been on-going since January 2015. The venue is a Category 2 UEFA stadium with a capacity of 3,075 and the main stand has seating capacity for 1,340.
The official opening was performed by the President of Ireland, Michael D. Higgins before the match and the opening was also attended by Michael Noonan TD, Minister of Finance and Jan O’Sullivan TD, Minister of Education. The weather held up and there was a terrific buzz about the venue. Additional project photos to follow!
