Project Description

The museum in Bochnia is located in the old market square, a heritage site on the UNESCO list.  The competition called for an extension to the existing museum to accommodate the growing collection of artefacts and to provide ancillary functions including a shop and cafe.  The site itself is long and narrow, squeezed between the existing museum building and a neighbouring shop.

In view of the sensitive site, the design solution is sympathetic to the other buildings in the square yet adopts a contemporary language. The new addition is separated from the existing structure by a two storey glazed circulation zone which is animated by a bridge connection with the existing museum at first floor level.    The innovative solution for daylighting in the first floor gallery echoes the characteristic chimneys on the roofs of the surrounding buildings.
